The Good Old Days
Letters from my Grandmother

May 23, 2001
"The one picture is of a washing machine like I had in 1937, only don't believe mine had the wringer.  Think I told you of the washer.  We got a copper gasoline engine washer later that year.

"I know you have seen windmills.  We lived at a place near Metamora, Indiana where we got our water for the house from a windmill.  It gave water when the wind blew into a cattle and horse tank for stock.  If we went to get water we didn't get any if the wind wasn't blowing enough.  So couldn't run out of water in case of no wind.

"We had a cistern hand pump but couldn't drink, was for washing clothes and dishes...
This is from one of a series of letters my grandmother wrote about her life in Indiana in Michigan.
